71-Year-Old's Body Found In Merrimack River

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them after a body was found near the Whittier Bridge in Amesbury.

AMESBURY, MA — A body was found near a bridge on the Merrimack River in Amesbury Tuesday morning, police said.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard pulled the body of a 71-year-old near the Whittier Bridge, which connects I-95 over the river.

According to police, the man's identity was discovered but is not being released until the family is informed.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim," the Newburyport Police Department said in a statement.

Massachusetts State Police are assisting in the investigation, and good Samaritans were thanked for immediately calling for help once the body was discovered.
