Alert: North Andover Police Warn Of 'Grandchild In Jail' Scam

In this scam, the scammer calls claiming to be or to represent the victim's grandchild, who is in jail and needs bail money.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — North Andover police warned recent of a recent increase in "grandchild in jail" scams in the area, Monday.

"This involves a phone call to a grandparent claiming that their grandchild has been arrested for a serious offense and needs money for bail," the police said.

In the scam, the grandparent is told a courier will pick money up for bail and deliver it to the grandchild's attorney.

"The scammers are very convincing, and use real personalized information that they have gathered, mostly through social media," the police said. "This is not how bail is arranged in Massachusetts."
