  • This Day in History: In 1817, the first American school for the deaf was opened in Hartford, Conn. In 1850, the city of San Francisco was incorporated. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln died after being shot by John Wilkes Booth. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed the Japanese peace treaty.
