• This Day in History: In 1877, federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the North's post-Civil War rule in the South. In 1889, the Edison General Electric Company was organized. In 1962, MIT sent a TV signal by satellite for the first time. In 1990, the Hubble Telescope was launched into space via the space shuttle Discovery.
