It's Coyote Mating Season, So Watch Your Pets: Animal Control

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — It's coyote mating season, and that means residents should be extra careful with their pets, North Andover Animal Control said Monday.

"In the winter, coyote parents must work extra hard to feed themselves and their pups," Animal Control Officer Brad DiCenzo said on Facebook. "This means you will see them roaming around more frequently. Coyotes are opportunistic feeders, meaning they will feed on whatever is most rapidly available and easiest to obtain."

Coyote attacks on humans are very rare, but attacks on pets are more common, so residents should keep a close eye on their furry friends.

"Keep your pets under supervision, dogs on a leash & cats inside," the officer said. "Feed pets inside to avoid attracting wildlife."

He also noted that residents should not be surprised to see and hear coyotes during the day.

"Coyotes are NOT nocturnal animals and this time of year; you might hear your coyote neighbors more frequently as pairs vocalize to claim territory and partners," he said.

Residents should also avoid feeding coyotes, in order to keep them wild. That includes securing your garbage, DiCenzo said.

"Coyotes are typically shy and elusive," he said. "They can be seen alone, in pairs or small groups. Coyotes are naturally afraid of people and do not like loud noises."
