Merrimack Women's Soccer Coach Gabe Mejail Earns 500th Victory

Mejail, in his 39th season, earned No. 500 in the Warriors' 3-1 win over Vermont on Sunday. Mejail's overall record stands at 500-257-62.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA —Merrimack College women's soccer coach Gabe Mejail earned his 500th career victory as the Warriors defeated Vermont 3-1 Sunday at Martone-Mejail Field in North Andover.

Mejail became just the ninth coach in NCAA women's soccer history to reach 500 wins. Now in his 39th season, Mejail's overall record is 500-257-62.

"It is so exciting to reach this milestone, but I certainly owe it all to the hard work of the players and the support of our coaches and the community at Merrimack College," Mejail said.

In his nearly four decades in charge in North Andover, Mejail has led Merrimack to eight Northeast-10 Conference regular-season championships, six NE10 Tournament titles, two ECAC titles and 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in the 1996 Division II NCAA Tournament.

On Sunday, Merrimack freshman defender Caleigh Christensen, junior forward Molly Murnane and freshman forward Ella Cormier scored the goals for the Warriors, who improved to 1-1-0 on the young season. The Catamounts dropped to 1-1-0.

Meanwhile, the Warriors' junior goalkeeper Lily Morgan made seven saves for the second straight contest. Morgan also made seven saves in the season-opening 2-1 loss to UMass-Lowell on Aug. 18.

For those performances, Morgan was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Hudson, Ohio native did not play in 2021 because of an injury.

The Warriors return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when they visit the University of Maine. After that, Merrimack returns home at noon on Sunday to host California Baptist.
