North Andover Man Gets 18 Months For Misusing Social Security Number

Angel Manuel German Familia pleaded guilty in May. The Dominican national also faces deportation proceedings after completing the sentence.

BOSTON, MA — A North Andover man, who is a Dominican national, was sentenced last week in a Boston federal court to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to fraudulently using someone else's Social Security number, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Massachusetts.

Angel Manuel German Familia, 38, pleaded guilty to two counts of false representation of a Social Security number on May 31, 2022.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Stearns sentenced German Familia to 18 months in jail, plus three years of supervised release. Authorities said German Familia is subject to deportation proceedings upon completion of his sentence.

According to court records, in 2016, German Familia fraudulently used the name, date of birth and Social Security number of a U.S. citizen when applying to renew a driver's license at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).

German Familia also applied for MassHealth benefits and opened bank accounts in the victim's name, authorities said.

Additionally, authorities said that German Familia had been using the stolen identity since as early as 2009 and that he had submitted a Social Security card and birth certificate in the victim's name on a previous RMV application.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Homeland Security Investigation's Document and Benefit Fraud Task Force (DBFTF).
