'Who Would Do Something Like This?'

A North Andover barber and his wife were at one of the explosion locations before the blast.

North Andover Barber Shop owner John Daniel Moffat may owe his family's well-being to a twist of fate and a cool breeze.

Moffat and his wife were at the Boston Marathon, near the finish line, close to the area where the second explosion would hit.

"We were standing right in front of Lord & Taylor," Moffat said. "There were families there. We were there having a great time."

A little while before the blasts, however, a cool breeze set in, prompting Moffat and his wife to leave to go to lunch.

When the couple arrived at a restaurant in Somerville, what they saw on TV news reports shocked them.

"If you saw on the news, the first bomb went off, and then probably 15 seconds later was the second bomb, and that was across the street from Lord & Taylor. We were probably about 25 feet from where the second bomb went off."

The explosions killed three people -- an 8-year-old boy, a 29-year-old woman and a Boston University graduate student -- and injured more than 170 others.

"It's devastating to think, who would do something like this?" Moffat said.

While many people have expressed tough resolve to go to the marathon next year, Moffat plans to stay home. A new father -- his son was born in September -- he said he has become more cautious about big events and protecting his family.
