Areas of Northborough Lose Power

Shoppers experienced several seconds of blackout conditions inside Wegmans grocery store Saturday evening.

A nor'easter couldn't keep shoppers away from Wegmans tonight. The store, which opened two weeks ago, was filled with customers, until the power went out.

At about 5:30 p.m., Northborough Crossings lost power. Wegmans was pitch dark for about 20 seconds before the generator turned on, which is the size of a trailer according to the salespeople. No one panicked and the crowd of people cheered when the lights were turned back on, said one shopper.

A manager on the loud speaker said the generator would be turned on and people could continue shopping, which made the crowd cheer again. Though the generator powered most of the lights and cash registers, some areas of the store had dimmed lights like the produce area.

The other stores in the shopping center, were closed and dark after the power went out and the light at Southwest cutoff and Main Street in Northborough wasn't working as of 6 p.m.

The only other store in the plaza with power was BJs. All the other stores were closed due to the power outage.

National Grid is aware of the outage and is currently estimating the time it will take to restore the power to the area.
