Cops: Boys Lost After Running Ahead on Trail

The three young boys were all fine, but their separation from their parents Wednesday afternoon led to a police search.

Northborough Police on Wednesday night issued a press release about the successful search for three missing boys earlier in the day:

On Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 12:15 p.m., State Police received a 911 call from the parents of three young boys reporting that they had gone into the woods for a hike and became separated from the parents. Two brothers, ages 8 and 11 from Northborough, who had been on the trail before, along with an 8-year-old cousin from Chicago ran ahead on the trail and became lost. After walking the length of the loop trail, and not finding the boys, the parents called police.

Police from Shrewsbury, Northborough and the State Police established perimeter patrols on roads surrounding the wooded area in the event the boys walked out of the woods. A State Police K-9 unit and a Northborough officer entered the area to begin a search while other assets were being called in.

The State Police Air Wing commenced an aerial search of the area as well. At approximately 1 p.m., Northborough Officer Eric Michel spotted one of the 8 year old boys located near a home in the area of 255 West St., which borders the wooded area. Approximately 20 minutes later, the remaining two boys were spotted by the State Police helicopter flight crew. A trooper on foot was directed to their position whereupon they were escorted out of the woods and reunited with their mother.

All three boys were checked by Northborough Fire Department EMS personnel. None of the boys was injured or suffering from cold injuries.
