5 Things: Chess for Kids, PMC Social

Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on March 26 in the North End.

1. Chess for Kids: A friendly mentor will teach children ages 7 and up how to play chess today at 4 p.m. at the North End Branch Library (25 Parmenter St.). An intermediate program will begin at 4:45 p.m. Call 617-227-8135 to sign up with the children's librarian.

2. PMC Young Professionals event: The Pan-Mass Challenge is hosting a Young Professionals Event tonight from 6-9 p.m. at the Lansdowne Pub (9 Landsdowne St.). The event is a great way for people to network, meet new friends, and learn more about the logistics of riding in the PMC. Mingle with the PMC staff and register to ride or volunteer. Tickets cost $10 each. All attendees must be 21 or over. Space is limited; buy tickets at http://pmcyp.eventbrite.com.

3. Join the Mayor’s Youth Council: Mayor Thomas Menino is looking for Boston teens to volunteer 8-10 hours per month from June through May as part of the Mayor’s Youth Council. Participants work with the mayor and other city leaders to identify issues in their community and come up with positive solutions. 4. Special storytime: Bring the kids by theCharlestown Branch Library today at 11 a.m. to watch a short video adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Nightingale" and listen to Ms. Laura read books about birds. All ages are welcome.

5. Diabetes Alert Day: Today, the American Diabetes Association is holding Alert Day to raise awareness about the risks associated with Type 2 diabetes. If you’re concerned about your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes, the ADA asks you to take the Diabetes Risk Test, consisting of questions about your health habits and family history.
