5 Things: Free Art, Screenwriting Workshop

Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on May 16 in the North End.

1. Warming up: Today will be breezy and sunny with a high near 80 degrees and a low around 53, according to the National Weather Service.

2. Free art: Admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (100 Northern Ave.) is free to all ages every Thursday from 5-9 p.m.

3. Screenwriting workshop: Ever wanted to learn more about screenwriting for movies? The Boston Neighborhood Network is offering a workshop on the subject, on Saturdays, June 1-29, from 12:30-3 p.m. Cost is $100 for BNN-TV members and $150 for non-members. Register online at bnntv.org.

4. Homework help: The North End Branch Library (25 Parmenter St.) offers a free drop-in homework help program for students in grades K-8. High school-age mentors from Boston's public and private schools provide the academic support. The program runs daily most weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Visit the library website for more information.

5. Writing help: Are you a writer looking to finish your children's book project? The Associates of the Boston Public Library is now seeking applications for their 10th annual Children's Writer-in-Residence fellowship, which provides an author with a room to work at in the Central Library in Copley Square and a $20,000 stipend. The residency will run from October through June. Learn more and apply at writer-in-residence.org. Applications are due on Friday, May 24.
