5 Things: Greenway Market Opens, Memorial Day Concert
Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on May 24 in the North End.

1. More showers: Expect showers and possible thunderstorms all afternoon and into the evening, with patchy fog before noon, according to the National Weather Service. High: 69, Low: 52. Memorial Day weekend forecast: Showers are likely both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the upper 50s and lows around 46 degrees. Memorial Day should be mostly sunny with a high near 66 and a low around 50.
2. Market opens: The Greenway Open Market will launch its 2013 season this Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. along the Wharf District Parks on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Shop a variety of handmade and locally produced fine art, jewelry crafts, ceramics, apparel and accessories as well as handmade imports that are fair trade or eco-friendly. 3. Help for writers: Today is the deadline to apply for the Associates of the Boston Public Library’s 10th annual Children's Writer-in-Residence competition, a program that provides an emerging children's writer with the financial support and quiet space needed to complete a literary work within a nine-month period. 4. Memorial Day concert: Boston will welcome a new tradition this Memorial Day, with a free outdoor concert at Christopher Columbus Park (110 Atlantic Ave.) in the North End. “Remembrance 2013: A Musical Tribute to Our Heroes” will feature the Metropolitan Wind Symphony and the Boston City Singers and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and to use public transportation (the MBTA will operate on a Sunday schedule that day).
5. Big Brothers needed: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay has more than 1,000 kids waiting for Big Brothers in local communities for their community-based mentoring programs. To apply or learn more, visit bbbsmb.org or call 617-542-9090.
