Police: Watertown Man Charged with Trying to Steal and Jeep on Henchman Street

Police arrested a Watertown man who reportedly broke into a Jeep with a screwdriver and managed to start the engine.

 

Boston Police officers responded to a report of a person breaking into a car on Henchman Street at 7 p.m. on May 31.

The caller reported a man in a white shirt and white shorts was trying to break into a Jeep Cherokee in front of 17 Henchman Street. Officers arrived on the scene and observed the suspect kneeling on the front passenger seat of the Jeep.

When police went to talk to the man, they noticed that he was sweating profusely and appeared extremely nervous. The man was still inside the Jeep when officers asked him who the owner was. The man told police that he owned the car. Officers asked for his license and registration.

The man handed officers the registration from the glove box, which was already open. The name on the registration did not match his information. 

Officers placed the suspect in the back of their car. They observed that the passenger side keyhole was popped open. They also found a brock and a screwdriver on the floor of the car.

Officers contacted the caller, who said that he had heard a banging sound from his apartment and saw the suspect pounding the screwdriver into the lock for a bout 10 minutes. At this point, the caller dialed 911.

Officers went back to investigate the Jeep and found that the ignition was popped open and the motor was running with no keys in it. At this point, the officers read the suspect his rights and he confessed to trying to steal the car.

Officers charged Michael Carey of 1000 Belmont Street, Watertown, with breaking and entering a motor vehicle, possession of burglarious tools and larceny of a motor vehicle.
