North End voters helped fill an open Suffolk and Middlesex County Senate seat in an essentially ceremonial special election Tuesday.

Boston, MA - North End voters helped fill an open Suffolk and Middlesex County Senate seat in an essentially ceremonial special election Tuesday.

Democrat Joe Boncore was the only candidate on the ballot, after besting six competitors in a special primary April 12. He will fill the seat vacated by Anthony Petruccelli, who left the Senate this winter to become a lobbyist.

Polls were open 7 a.m. through 8 p.m.
