Week in Review: Coast Guard Fire, Rolling Stone Cover Drama

A look at some of the top stories on the North End last week.

Life gets busy, and Patch certainly understands that. So with that in mind, here are a few stories you might have missed on Charlestown Patch this week:

  1. Fire Causes $1M in Damage at U.S. Coast Guard Building—Boston Fire officials say the fire that broke out Tuesday morning at a U.S. Coast Guard building on Commercial Street was started when sparks from a welding project on the roof interacted with some combustible materials. 
  2. Should the BRA Separate? City Council Candidates Weigh In—Candidates for Boston City Council were asked that question at the July 10 Ward 3 Democratic Committee candidates’ night, held at the Nazzaro Center in Boston’s North End.
  3. Police: Chelsea Woman Charged with Crack Possession on Canal Street—A Chelsea woman was arrested for crack possession in the North End over the weekend.
  4. Police: Four Loko Drinker Charged with Exposing Himself on North Street—A man was charged with exposing himself, drinking in public, trespassing and malicious destruction of property on Tuesday.  
  5. New Editor Joins North End Patch—A few weeks ago, North End Patch introduced a new look that makes it easier than ever to share your North End news. Now, the site is introducing a new local editor—Becca Manning, who has been the local editor of Charlestown Patch since November and recently took charge of the North End site.
  6. CVS Not Selling Rolling Stone with Alleged Bomber on Cover—Stirring controversy on Facebook and other online outlets, Rolling Stone magazine's cover on the edition which releases Friday, is a photo of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Two places you won't find the issue are CVS Pharmacy, including the Hanover Street and Canal Street locations in the North End, and Roche Bros. 
  7. Clover Food Truck Off Road Because of Salmonella Concerns—If you're looking to get your Clover fix this week, you're going to have to wait. The ownership of the Clover food truck—which stops at Hanover Street and Surface Road on Fridays and Sundays and makes other visits in the North End area—announced this week that it would suspend all operations until further notice because of a salmonella scare. 
  8. Connolly, Walsh, Conley Top Suffolk/Herald Mayoral Poll—According to a poll conducted by Suffolk University and the Boston Herald, At-Large City Councilor John Connolly is favored by a razor thin margin to win the mayoral election.
  9. Is the North End at Risk for Lyme Disease?—Massachusetts is a hot zone for Lyme disease, but the rate of infection is relatively low in Boston. 
  10. 94th Annual St. Anthony's Feast Set Aug. 23-26 in the North End—The 94th annual St. Anthony's Feast is coming up on Aug. 24-26 in the North End.
