Norton Wants to Retry Solar Power at Landfill

Norton looking to be more agressive with solar energy at the closed landfill.

Norton selectman Robert Kimball said on Thursday that he received a letter from a solar company that wishes to build a solar generating area at the landfill.

“They said it had perfect exposure for this type of solar,” he said.

Kimball said that the monies obtained for the town over a 20-year period would equal $5M with this particular’s company’s planned claim.

Norton town manager Michael Yunits said the town had tried this before and the company on which they placed the bid never even started, and the town would be better served if they sent out a request for qualifications rather than a request for a proposal bid.

“You put requirements in there so that weed out the [companies] that aren’t going to go forward,” Yunits said.  “Then you pick the company that you think is going to move forward and you look at the procedure proposals.”

Kimball agreed, and said the town should be pursuing this in the future for the extra cash.

“We need to get more aggressive for the town to use this capped landfill as an energy source,” he said.
