Apartment Fire Kept at Bay by Boy's Quick Thinking

Norwood Firefighters were made aware of the fire by a young boy who pulled a manual alarm in the apartment complex on Dean St.

The quick thinking of a young boy in pulling a fire alarm may have prevented disaster at the Stonebridge Apartments on Dean St. Tuesday evening, Norwood Fire officials said.

Norwood Fire spokesman George Morrice said firefighters responded to a fire in one of the second floor apartments just after 9 p.m. Tuesday. A mattress and some clothing had been ignited, possibly by coming in contact with a goose neck reading lamp, in the bedroom of an apartment at the rear of the building.

A manual pull alarm was activated by a young boy living on the first floor of the complex.

"A quick application of water and removal of the mattress and clothing put an end to the potentially dangerous situation," Morrice's statement said. "No one was injured in the fire and firefighters cleared the scene at 10:25 p.m."

"The Norwood Fire Department praises the young boy for his smart thinking and quick action which most likely prevented a far worse situation from happening," Morrice said.
