NORWOOD, MA - Grab a friend and find a nice cool spot in the shade: National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, giving us the perfect opportunity to enjoy a summer favorite at some of the area's ice cream shops.

One is Daddy's Dairy at 95 Central St. in the heart of Norwood Center. It offers 80 flavors of hard ice cream, as well as lactose-free soft serve, frozen yogurt, and no-sugar-added options.

The added benefit is that you can relax at the picnic tables on Central Street to enjoy your treat, as the street has been closed to allow for outdoor dining. The Town Common across from Daddy's Dairy allows a space for children to play.

A nearby option in Westwood is Bertie's Creative Creamery, located at 305 Washington St., which makes its flavors on site. It offers 32 flavors, including specialties like blueberry crumble, orange pineapple and cotton candy.

The United States celebrated the first National Ice Cream Day in 1984. We celebrate the sweet treat thanks to former President Ronald Reagan, who wanted to commemorate the treat enjoyed by most Americans.

The top flavor in Massachusetts is cherry, according to the survey. Coming in second place was chocolate, followed by coffee and cookie dough. Rocky road rounded out the top five.
