Selectmen Discuss Possible Skating Rink, HS Project Status
Notes from the Board of Selectmen meeting Tuesday night.

Rep. Rogers and Board in Favor of Possible Skating Rink Construction
State Representative John Rogers appeared before the Board of Selectmen at Tuesday night's meeting to discuss the possibility of building a skating rink in the town of Norwood.
The facility would be a Department of Conservation and Recreation facility, funded by the state. Rogers said that the town's Rink Committee has been working hard to put together concrete options for the community, but the proposal is "still in the conceptual stages."

The final location for the rink would have to be a local decision, he said, although a site near the Coakley Middle School - where the tennis courts are currently - has been considered.
"It's not a secret that this town has wanted, in fact needed, a rink," Rogers said.

"I think it's a win-win for the town. I think it's an economic engine for the town," he continued.
The Board noted concerns about any cost to the town for maintaining the rink, parking, and the relocation of the tennis courts, but were overall in favor of the concept.
Selectman Paul Bishop said that a rink at that location could help to revitalize the South Norwood area.
"It's going to be a very positive thing for the town of Norwood," he said.
Nearby, the Metropolis Rink in Canton is a DCR rink. Any final decisions on future construction will be made by the Town Meeting.
New Norwood High School Property Near Completion
Project Manager for the Norwood High School construction Tim Bonfatti addressed the Board at Tuesday's meeting, saying that the contractor has really picked up the pace on completing the front of the school property.
Bonfatti said in the next couple weeks the front area of the school will really "start to take shape."
The contract requires completion by July 15.
"We have every reason to believe that wont be an issue," Bonfatti said.
Aside from some final fixes on the inside and landscaping projects behind the school, Bonfatti said the project is near completion.
Town Hall Repairs to Cost an Estimated $3 Million
Bonfatti also gave the Board information on the repairs to the Town Hall and tower, which are now estimated to cost $3.2 million. Another estimated $400,000 will be needed for other repairs, he said, such as the exterior site walls, and roof slates.
A bid for the funds will be brought before the Town Meeting in the fall.
