Town Approves 26 Units at One of the Town’s Busiest Intersections

Norwood growth is unstoppable much to the dismay of its residents.

Norwood's Board of Selectmen approved a major construction project to build 26 residential units next to Mr. Franks at 923-929 Washington Street. The board heard from applicants Attorney Phil Macchi and Pat Corrigan this past Tuesday on replacing an old dilapidated garage and a fully functional multi-family dwelling at the intersection of Washington and Walnut.

This approval comes to the dismay of many neighbors who argue this monstrosity would add to the already congested traffic at a very busy intersection. One neighbor argues the construction will force the destruction of several fully grown, and healthy trees that separate his home from the noise of Washington St. What’s more, the town approved just 41 onsite parking spaces to accommodate the new residents. Thus, if every family has 2 cars, as is the national average, the building is 11 short. This will force on-street parking on already crowded roads.

Of course, housing is always needed and turning a dilapidated garage into something useful is a progressive step forward. However, it does not appear the considerations of the existing residents were prioritized. As with any positive innovation, organizers must consider the ramifications of those who are directly impacted. -FC
