📰 News we're reading

1. Drug Trafficking, Distribution Charges Follow Cape Cod Search (patch.com) — Police executed a search warrant at an Orleans residence on Dec. 4, leading to the arrest of a local woman on fentanyl trafficking and other drug distribution charges. Investigators from Orleans, Yarmouth, Harwich, and the DEA seized drugs, scales, and cash, and the suspect was arraigned at Orleans District Court the next day.

2. Select Board Votes To Expand Early Education Program (capecodchronicle.com) — Orleans parents struggling with steep childcare costs just got a boost: the Select Board voted 3-0 to expand the town’s early education and care program to cover children from birth to age 4 and run year-round. With about $45,000 left this fiscal year, eligible Orleans families can now apply for $7,000 grants on a first-come basis, with larger, longer-term support planned for 2027.

3. Rock Harbor Group Moves to Dismiss Child Labor Suit (provincetownindependent.org) — From Orleans, residents are watching a high-profile legal fight over alleged child labor tied to the Community of Jesus and a Brewster construction project. The group’s attorney has moved to dismiss 18-year-old Oliver Ortolani’s federal lawsuit and separately sued his parents, while former members and a new nonprofit, Rock Harbor Truth, publicly challenge the attempt to shift blame.

4. Rescuers save stranded dolphins in Wareham (boston.com) — A recent dolphin rescue in Wareham highlights the critical work of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which also runs the Dolphin Rescue Center in Orleans. Rescuers safely transported two stranded common dolphins for medical evaluation, as IFAW continues responding to a surge in strandings across Massachusetts. The group is now determining whether the animals can be released back into local waters.

5. Orleans Food Pantry Expands to Keep Up With Increased Demand (provincetownindependent.org) — Orleans residents relying on the food pantry at 19 Brewster Cross Road will now find a much larger space as demand for assistance surges across the Lower and Outer Cape. The Lower Cape Outreach Council has more than doubled the pantry’s size and added a walk-in freezer, but rising food insecurity and uncertainty around federal SNAP funding are straining budgets and supplies.
