Papyrus Store Closings Include 10 Massachusetts Locations

The greeting card retailer is closing all 244 of its stores over the next two months.

PEABODY, MA — Schurman Retail Group plans to close all 244 of its Papyrus stores over the next two months, including 10 in Massachusetts. In addition to the store at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, the Massachusetts locations include Boston's Downtown Crossing, Back Bay's Prudential Center, Braintree's South Shore Plaza, the Burlington Mall, the Natick Mall, Cambridge's Harvard Square, Chestnut Hill and Wellesley.

"This decision is heartbreaking for me, personally of course, and also because I know how dedicated you all have been to your stores and this company," CEO Dominique Schurman said in a letter to Papyrus's 1,400 employees.

The company will have liquidation sales at its locations, and some stores have already started advertising 20 percent discounts, according to the Boston Business Journal. The announcement comes after steady declines in greeting card sales and just before Valentine's Day, which is the second-biggest greeting card holiday after Christmas.
