Peabody Firefighters Battle Blaze Overnight

The fire Monday night in Peabody shut down the Coolidge Avenue water treatment plant.

PEABODY, MA – Peabody firefighters were battling a fire on Coolidge Avenue from roughly 7:30 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The blaze in the treatment plant shut down operations, but a hazmat team on scene found no contamination in the air or water, according to Deputy Chief Joe Daly. The extent of the damage is unclear.

The hazmat team was called because the facility contains chemicals used to treat the water. There were concerns about smoke in the neighborhood, but the wind cleared it quickly, said Daly.

The cold Monday night wasn't as much of a challenge for firefighters as the structure itself. Daly said hidden voids in the roof made it difficult to fight the fire, and made it unsafe for firefighters to be inside the building.

No injuries or environmental were reported. The on-site investigation is complete, and investigators are in the process of making a determination. Peabody Fire and the state first marshal's office are investigating the fire.
