Peabody Imposes New Default Speed Limit
The default speed limit in Peabody has dropped 5 mph, effective May 1.

PEABODY, MA – Peabody's new default speed limit for unmarked city roads went into effect on May 1. Streets that don't have posted speed limits are automatically reduced from 30 to 25 mph.
The state legislature changed a law last year to give municipalities more control over speed limits on local roads. Mayor Ted Bettencourt completed an evaluation on the city roads, and City Council adopted the change in February.
The posted speed limits are still valid.

"We believe this change to our citywide speed limit will make everyone who lives, works or visits Peabody safer," said Bettencourt. "Police Chief Griffin and I spent a good deal of time discussing and analyzing this issue and we believe it makes sense for the community."
