Peabody Mayor 'Not Very Happy With National Grid'

The utility missed a May deadline to finish utility upgrades, meaning the city will not be able to repave Lowell Street this year.

PEABODY, MA — National Grid missed a May deadline to finish utility upgrades on Lowell Street in Peabody, and Mayor Ted Bettencourt isn't hiding his feelings about the delays. In a letter to residents, Bettencourt said the city will have to wait until next year to repave the street in a busy section of downtown, and heavier than normal traffic and secondary road closures into the holiday season.

"In case you cannot tell, I am not very happy with National Grid these days," Bettencourt wrote. The utility "has missed its own deadline by a few months and fallen far short in terms
of communicating road closures and other important project information with the city and our
residents."

The work area on Lowell Street runs west from city hall to just past the intersection of King Street

and Endicott Street. Repaving work cannot start until the spring thaw, Bettencourt said.
