Peabody Memorial Day Ceremony To Honor Families Of Fallen Heroes

Nine Peabody families will receive the Medal of Liberty in honor of veterans who died during service.

PEABODY, MA – The City of Peabody will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony to honor families of fallen heroes at City Hall.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt will present the Medal of Liberty to nine families on behalf of Gov. Charlie Baker. The medal is awarded to the next of kin of service men and women in Massachusetts killed in action, or who died in service while in an official combat zone, or who died of wounds received in action.

The Medal of Liberty has been awarded to 145 families of military members who died in service to their country from every branch of the U.S. Military.

Despite the number of medals that have been awarded, the number of medals that could be awarded is much higher. A statement from the mayor's office noted that HonorStates.org estimates that more than 10,000 Massachusetts residents sacrificed their lives in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

The ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m. on Monday in front of Peabody City Hall at 24 Lowell St.
