Peabody Planning 'Heather MacLean Day' To Honor Hometown Olympian
Mayor Ted Bettencourt said plans are being discussed with the hometown hero's family with details to be revealed soon.

PEABODY, MA — Peabody is putting in place plans to honor its hometown Olympic hero with a Heather MacLean Day in the city.
The Peabody Veterans Memorial and UMass-Amherst alumna qualified for the semifinals in the 1,500 meters at the Tokyo Summer Games earlier this month before coming up short in her bid to run for a medal in the finals.
Mayor Ted Bettencourt said on Monday that he was discussing details of a proposed event with members of the MacLean family and that more details will be forthcoming "very soon."

MacLean advanced to the semifinals in Tokyo with a strong preliminary run that hundreds of Peabody residents watched during a public viewing party at the Leather City Common.
She finished third in the event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon in early July — edging out the fourth-place runner by nine-hundredths of a second.

"Heather MacLean Day in Peabody will be an opportunity to show Heather how much we appreciate and admire her hard work and determination — and how proud we all are of our hometown Olympic hero," Bettencourt said.
