Peabody Resident Honored At MA State House Military Appreciation Day

Peabody resident Lieutenant Commander Robert M. Dunne, Jr. was recognized for his military service, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

PEABODY, MA — A retired Peabody lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy who served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti was honored last week as part of the first Military Appreciation Day held at the State House.

The Executive Office of Veterans Services hosted the event in the House Chamber, where each member of the legislature was able to nominate an honoree from his or her community. State Rep. Thomas Walsh (D-Peabody) nominated Robert M. Dunne Jr. for recognition.

Dunne enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1992 and served deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti. He also served in Turkey, Korea, Portugal, Egypt, and Spain.

Dunne was recently presented the prestigious Knowlton Award for his contributions to military intelligence and has twice been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He serves as the Commander of the Peabody Veterans Council, President of the Fleet Reserve Association, and in an officer capacity in the Portuguese-American War Veterans, Polish Legion of American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Dunne is also involved in motivating and encouraging students in the AFJROTC program at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.

"For decades, Lieutenant Commander Dunne has served our country and community with distinction and honor," Walsh said. "I was pleased to nominate Lt. Commander Dunne to the Secretary for consideration in today’s ceremony, which the Department of Veterans Services developed to celebrate the extraordinary contributions and achievements of our veterans.”"

In addition to his Bachelor’s Degree from Salem State, Dunne earned a Master of Arts as a graduate of the Naval War College in Rhode Island. Dunne is the husband of Peabody School Committee member Beverley Ann Griffin Dunne, a father of four, and a grandfather of one.
