Pump The Brakes: Peabody Speed Limit Could Drop

The standard speed limit in Peabody is set to drop from 30 to 25 mph on unmarked roads.

PEABODY, MA – Peabody City Council voted last week to drop the standard speed limit from 30 to 25 mph, the latest city to do so.

The state voted over the summer to give cities and towns discretion for the speed limit on roads that do not have a posted speed limit sign. Since then, Beverly has officially dropped its speed limit and put out signs at the entrances to the city warning of the change. Beverly Police started an educational campaign last week, alerting people to the lowered limit.

Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt said Peabody would take similar measures to let residents know the new default speed limit. He said he was looking to implement the change in March.
