PEABODY, MA — Route 1 in Peabody was reopened in both directions MOnday afternoon following a two-car crash that had closed both sides of the highway. The driver of one of the two SUVs was taken by helicopter to Tufts Medical Center n Boston. The driver and two passengers in the other SUV were taken by ambulance to Beverly hospital.

The crash occurred near the Lowell Street interchange on the northbound side of the highway. Police initially called for the helicopter to land at the Kennedy School in Peabody but are now having it land directly on the highway, according to scanner reports. The direct landing on Route 1 prompted police to close both sides of the highway, but the south side was reopened a short time later when the helicopter landed in the parking lot of a nearby business, according to scanner reports.

Aerial footage of the crash site shows two SUVs facing the wrong direction with heavy damage to the front end of one of the vehicles.
