I believe that Barry is the right person for the job

A Letter to the Editor from Karen Kalafatas:

I’m voting for Barry Berman for Select Board because I believe in community.

It’s no secret that Reading is in a time of transition. Whether it’s an override vote, economic development, tax relief for seniors, or human rights issues, as a community we have faced some tough conversations – and tough choices – in the last few years.

This is why I believe that Barry is the right person for the job. In his years of service as Select Board member, Barry has demonstrated not only results, but also a dedication to bi-partisanship leadership.

Barry knows that the strength of our town lies in its relationships. He understands that we’re neighbors. We’re friends. He knows that as the national political climate continues to divide our country, now more than ever, we as a community need to debate complex problems respectfully, find common ground, stand together against acts of hate, and listen to each other. As a Select Board member and leader, Barry has actively sought input and opinions from a cross-section of community members. He’s represented all of us, not just some. And in doing so, he has kept our community together.

I’m voting for Barry because I love and respect my neighbors, and our differing views and perspectives. We are a 93-year-old World War II Veteran who raised 2 children with his late wife here; a nearly retired couple with grown children they raised here; a family with 2 high schoolers beginning to think about college; and a young family who moved here 6 years ago in search of great schools and a welcoming community to all.

Now more than ever, we need someone who will listen to those of us who have lived here for generations, and those of us who have chosen to raise the next generation here. Barry has repeatedly sought common ground among us. He has proven he is the leader we need.

Please join me in voting for Barry Berman on April 2nd.
