Reading Man Indicted In Health Insurance Fraud Plot

Seven people are accused of fraudulently collecting $326,000 from insurance companies after submitting false claims for treatment in Africa.

READING, MA — A Reading man is among seven people indicted in connection with a scheme to defraud health insurance companies by collecting reimbursement checks for medical treatment they never received, Attorney General Maura Healey's office said.

Henry Ezeonyido, 34, is charged with seven counts of insurance fraud, three counts of larceny, four counts of attempted larceny, and one count each of conspiracy and being a common and notorious thief.

Between March 2015 and February 2021, Ezeonyido and six others fraudulently collected more than $326,000 in reimbursement checks by submitting 18 false insurance claims for medical treatment they allegedly received while traveling in Africa, the attorney general's office said.

The investigation found the 18 sets of medical records provided to insurance companies were substantially similar, and several of the people involved were working and collecting paychecks in the United States when they claimed they were hospitalized in Africa, the attorney general's office said.

Ezeonyido and the others were indicted by a statewide grand on Monday. They will be arraigned in Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth, Essex and Worcester superior courts at a later date.
