Reading MLK Day Event To Feature Breakfast, Performances, Speaker
The RMHS jazz band and mixed chorus will perform and a speech will be given by Lynette Marshall of the CA-based Flourish Foundation.
READING, MA — The Town of Reading has announced details of its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event next week.
On Jan. 16, which is a national holiday, the Town will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Breakfast and Cultural Program at Reading Memorial High School's Performing Arts Center, located at 62 Oakland Rd. The breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the cultural program at 10 a.m.
The theme of this year's event is "True Peace is the Presence of Justice." The breakfast and program are free, and everyone is invited to attend the event which, according to organizers, will commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his ongoing influence on the world.

The event will feature an interfaith invocation by the Reading Clergy Association and performances by the RMHS jazz band and mixed chorus, in addition to other student performances.
The guest speaker will be Lynette Marshall, the co-founder and director of learning and collaboration for the Flourish Collective, a racial and social justice organization based in Danville, California.

Organizers said the event also will feature a "Trees of Peace" interactive art exhibit.
"MLK Day has historically been an important day of celebration in our town," said Dr. Sudeshna Chatterjee, director of Equity and Social Justice for Reading." Several community members and groups — including students, teachers and staff — have worked collaboratively to put together this amazing program encompassing several activities, including the Trees of Peace arts display, community breakfast and student performances, which are aimed toward community education, reflection and awareness."
Chatterjee continued: "I hope everyone will be able to join us in this celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King, as we reflect on community healing and inclusive peace in our beloved town here in Reading. "
