Reading Native Mike Tobin Named A Tri-Captain For UMass Lacrosse Team

The senior middie, a former Reading Memorial High standout, had 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) for the Minutemen last season.

AMHERST, MA — Reading native Mike Tobin was named Wednesday as one of the tri-captains for the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team.

UMass already is playing exhibition games and is scheduled to start the regular season on Feb. 11 at home against Army.

A senior midfielder, Tobin had 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) last season for a UMass team that went 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Tobin's point total ranked fourth on the team, and he was a NEILA All-New England Second-Team selection.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound former Reading Memorial High School star, scored hat tricks against Yale and UMass Lowell in 2022, and he contributed 17 ground balls and four caused turnovers.

In his collegiate career, Tobin has played in 31 games and recorded 50 points on 24 goals and 26 assists.

"Michael Tobin has been a terrific leader by example his entire career here at UMass," Minutemen head coach Gregory Cannella told Patch. "Everyone on our team voted for Michael to be a captain this year, I can't remember that ever happening here. It just goes to show you what type of person Michael truly is."

Cannella added: "(Tobin is) consistent, passionate and dedicated to creating a terrific brotherhood within the team. He is a pleasure to coach and a fine representative of our university and lacrosse program."

Tobin and his brother Kevin Tobin, also a middie, played together at UMass during each of the previous three seasons, though Kevin's eligibility has expired.

In high school, Mike Tobin was a three-time Middlesex League All-Star for RMHS, and he led the Rockets to the 2018 MIAA Division 2 lacrosse state championship. Tobin scored five goals in a 13-9 win over Concord-Carlisle in the state championship game.

As a senior, Tobin had 101 points on 57 goals and 44 assists for RMHS.
