READING, MA — Reading drivers will need to avoid parking overnight on area roads and most municipal lots beginning next week as the town’s overnight parking ban takes effect, the town announced last week.

The ban is scheduled to begin on Dec. 5, although it could take effect earlier if snow is forecast.

The ban prohibits overnight parking on public ways in Reading and in municipal lots between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Reading residents can utilize an exception to the ban if they display a Reading resident parking pass and park in the southernmost Depot parking lot on Lincoln Street. The open lot is the smaller of the two lots at the site. There is signage noting that the lot is open for overnight parking.

Those who park in the overnight lot will need to remove their vehicles by 6 a.m. following any snowfall.

“The Reading DPW and Police Department appreciate all the cooperation with this regulation,” Police said in their announcement last week. “It helps ensure the DPW can safely and swiftly keep the roads open for travel, open the schools, and maintain the downtown area properly.”
