READING, MA — A potentially historic blizzard is on its way to Massachusetts, but Reading, like most communities, will grapple with staffing shortages during cleanup.

That means it will take longer to clear snow from sidewalks, town officials said. Due to the expected duration of the storm and staffing challenges among the town's contractors, sidewalks will not be fully cleared until Tuesday or Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning from coastal Massachusetts and the Cape to the I-495/I-95 corridor. The latest forecasts call for 18-24 inches of snow to fall overnight Friday until Sunday morning.

The expected accumulation means crews will need to use blower units, which take about twice as long as a sidewalk V-nose plow, according to a statement from the town.

Residents are asked to bring inside anything that may be curbside, including trash barrels, recycling containers and basketball hoops. These impede the removal process and are dangerous for drivers and residents.

Residents should also check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly and house-bound. People should avoid being on the roads if possible.
