Reading, Wilmington Students Are Winners Of RMLD's HS Art Contest

Students were asked to submit work that visually portrays the concept of "trail blazing." See the winning artwork here.

READING, MA — Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) has announced the winners of its sixth annual High School Art Contest.

The winners will be honored during a reception on Tuesday at RMLD, located at 230 Ash St. RMLD provides power to Reading, Wilmington, North Reading, and Lynnfield Center

The theme of this year's contest was "trail blazing," and students were asked to visually portray the concept of trail blazing while incorporating RMLD and/or electricity into their artwork.

The art was required to be two-dimensional, which included but was not limited to drawings, paintings, sketches, photography and graphic art, and include at least three colors. Each submission was expected to have a title, and students were asked to submit a few sentences explaining their artwork.

Students from Reading, Wilmington, North Reading and the areas of Lynnfield were eligible to take part.

The first-place winner was Chris Ferreira, a senior at Reading Memorial High School, for his submission "Sustainability."

A second-place tie featured "New Inventions" by Astrid Puff, a junior at Reading Memorial High, and "A Revolution for the Future Generations," by Kurt Rothermund, a junior at Lynnfield High.

Lynfield High sophomore Timothy Sullivan took third place for his submission "The Trail Blazing Begins But Never Ends ... And That's a Good Thing!"

Meanwhile, "Nosedive" by Piper Kirwin, a junior at North Reading High, earned fourth place.

Wilmington High senior Lauryn Hurley earned the Clever Award for her submission "Dare to Stray from the Herd and Forge Your Own Path Ahead."

The latter piece included a photograph of Hurley's sister "acting as a trailblazer, treading a new path and being different," according to the artist. Hurley said she used the light and technology of her projector to create the image.
