Reading Wins $250K For Walkers Brook Drive Improvements

Town Manager Fidel Maltez said this week that the area has a "high potential for future development."

READING, MA — Reading’s Walkers Brook Drive area may soon see new infrastructure work thanks to a $250,000 state grant announced last week.

The state announced a major batch of grants on Wednesday under the umbrella Community One Stop for Growth initiative. One Stop encompasses 12 individual grant programs. It doled out $143 million to support 337 projects across 169 communities with this round of funding.

Reading received money under the state’s Housing Choice Grant program, according to state records.

Contacted on Monday, Reading Town Manager Fidel Maltez said the town is “very excited” about the chance to plan infrastructure improvements around Walkers Brook Drive.

Walkers Brook Drive bisects commercial centers in Reading near the Wakefield/Reading town line.

Maltez did not note specific infrastructure plans.

“This is an area of high potential for future development,” he said, though. “We look forward to engaging our businesses and residents throughout the design process.”
