Scammer Threatening To Cut Off Residents' Power In Reading
Town officials said the scammer is posing as an employee of the Reading Municipal Light Department.
READING, MA — Reading residents have been targeted by a scammer pretending to work for the Reading Municipal Light Department. The scammer calls residents and threatens to shut their electricity off immediately if a payment isn't made.
"The scammer has gone so far as to provide a work order number for the shut off, and has an automated phone recording impersonating the RMLD if the customer calls back," town officials said.
This is not the RMLD, which will never demand immediate payment in this fashion. Residents who receive this type of call are warned not to submit a payment or share their personal information. These calls should be reported to the RMLD at 781-942-6598.
