Reaction On The Passing Of Nelson Burbank

A statement From The Town of Reading on the passing of Nelson Burbank:

(READING, MA- August 29, 2019) - The Town of Reading sends condolences to the family of Nelson S. Burbank on the occasion of his passing today. Mr. Burbank demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship to this community and the nation through his service with the United States Army, the American Red Cross, the Reading Ice Arena Authority, and innumerable local projects. His generosity was only surpassed by his humble nature. Nelson and Rita’s philanthropy and leadership over decades leave a sterling legacy in Reading.

"He and his late wife Rita left a legacy in our community that centered around their love for future generations. Public acknowledgements include the Reading YMCA, the Ice Arena, Memorial Park and the Mattera Cabin – all of which provide both active and passive recreation opportunities for all of our children. There were many other private activities as well.

"Through his personal friendship many folks, perhaps his greatest legacy is the reminder that a community consists of a lot of friends that help care for each other."

A statement from School Committee Chairman Chuck Robinson:

"Over the next few days there's going to be a celebration of a wonderful life and legacy of Nelson Burbank. He and his wife Rita made so many legacies in this community that will live on for generations ... it was all for the community and all for the kids, and active recreation. I became friends with Mr. Burbank of the past few years and he was a wonderful, kind, special person. On behalf of the School Committee, I'd ask everyone to keep his family in our thoughts."
