Three Reading High Football Players Named to Agganis All-Star Team

Class of 2012 football players, Billy Carnes, Tom Beucler and Andrew Ferraro helped lead the North to a hard fought, last minute, 26-25 last minute victory over the South in the 51’st Agganis All-Star Football Classic game which was played last Friday night at Manning Field in Lynn.

Billy Carnes, started at linebacker for the North squad and helped key the defense. At RMHS, Carnes, was a captain of the football and lacrosse teams and was named to the Middlesex League all star football team.  Carnes was honored with the Jack White Award, and was co-recipient of the inaugural Friends of Reading Football Scholarship for his commitment to the program and character on and off the field. He was also awarded the William H. Willis and Marjorie Pacino Scholarships. Billy will continue his football career at Merrimack College this fall.

Tom Beucler, started at defensive tackle for the North team. Beucler was a three-sport letterman in football, wrestling and outdoor track at RMHS. Tom was a captain of the football and outdoor track teams.  Beucler, a stalwart on the line as defensive nose tackle and offensive guard was a Middlesex League football all-star. Tom will be attending the University of Massachusetts, Darmouth in the fall.

Andrew Ferraro started at center for the North squad and was named a captain.  Ferraro lettered in football, baseball and hockey.  Andrew was named to the Middlesex League all-star team in football.  He was honored to receive the Ingersoll Award for excellence on the football field and in the classroom.  Andrew was also a co-recipient of the Friends of Reading Football’s first annual scholarship.  Andrew will be attending Colby College in the fall and will be a member of Colby’s football team.  He intends on majoring in economics.

The Agganis Football Classic All-Star teams are made up of high school seniors from Eastern Massachusetts. The players are nominated by coaches and selected by the Agganis Foundation.  The Agganis Foundation honors Harry Agganis, the legendary Lynn Classical, Boston University and Red Sox standout who died of a massive pulmonary embolism in 1955 when he was just 26 years old.   

For 57 years, the mission of the Agganis Foundation has been to advance academic and athletic achievement. The Agganis Football Classic began in 1956 and has been the primary fundraiser for the foundation, which gives out scholarships in honor of the name and memory of Harry Agganis. According to the foundation 861 students have received four year scholarships totaling $1.5 million.
