'Wolfgang' Drug Bust Began With Roslindale Man: FBI

BOSTON, MA — A sweeping wiretap investigation that culminated in dozens of arrests Thursday began by tracking a single man — Yohan Gomez, who lived in Roslindale at the start of the investigation and whose recent address is in Dedham.

Gomez is believed to be a member of the Mozart Street Gang, which Jamaica Plain neighbors will remember for its violent and frequently fatal rivalry with the Boylston Street gang throughout the late 2000s. Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley on Thursday called the group "a violent drug trafficking organization that conducted robberies, shootings and armed home invasions."

Gomez, 29, was investigators' initial target, according to Conley.

He eventually led them to 26-year-old Elizabeth Comas, of Hyde Park, who officials believe is responsible for bringing large quantities of heroin into the United States from the Dominican Republic, Conley said. She had no previous criminal record, he noted. Gomez was previously charged for possession and intent to manufacture, distribute and dispense illegal drugs in Roslindale, according to one 2009 report.

Both Gomez and Comas were among the dozens arrested Thursday in the course of a wiretap-facilitated investigation officials called "Operation Wolfgang."

Officials referred to both as "high-level drug traffickers."

A 2012 investigation similar to Thursday's netted 14 members of Mozart Street's rival Boylston Street gang.

That same year, Jamaica Plain Patch assembled a list of violent crimes and deaths associated with the two groups, including at least seven homicides in a five-year span. Those allegedly included the shooting of a 6-month-old infant in 2008, according to a Boston Globe report at the time, as well as a 2010 triple-homicide at a Centre Street pizzeria.

Gomez was held on a $2 million cash bail Thursday. Roslindale resident and fellow "top-level target" Efrain Gonzalez, 27, was also arrested Thursday afternoon in New York, and will be return to Massachusetts to face charges.
