SALEM, MA — Over 50 beagles are coming to an animal shelter in Massachusetts after about 4,000 of them were rescued from the company Envigo in Virginia.

Envigo was shut down in early July after an investigation found that thousands of dogs who were being bred for research purposes were forced to live in confined, unsanitary, and inhumane conditions.

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Northeast Animal Shelter say they will be heading to Virginia to gather the new dogs within the next week. The MSPCA said they will have a more accurate number of how many beagles they will be gathering as the transport date gets closer.

As many as eight pregnant beagles will be included in the transport, confirming the availability of puppies for adoption in upcoming weeks, the organization said.
