Explorers Announces Free Lecture Series for North Shore Seniors
These Winter Intersession Lectures span a variety of topics and are open to Explorers members and nonmembers alike, 50 and above.

From Salem State University: Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute of Salem State University, 10 Federal Street in downtown Salem, is offering free winter lectures for seniors, ages 50 and above. These Winter Intersession Lectures span a variety of topics and are open to Explorers members and nonmembers alike.

Monday, January 9 – Washington after the Election – Michael Goldman is President of Goldman Associates, a firm that provides communications and strategic planning services. In recent years Mr. Goldman has served as the Senior Campaign Consultant for the successful campaigns of Maura Healey for Massachusetts Attorney General, and Suzanne Bump for Massachusetts State Auditor. He was also Senior Media Consultant for the successful mayoral campaign of Martin J. Walsh of Boston. Mr. Goldman will share his insights about what happened in the 2016 election and what this likely means for the future.

Wednesday, January 11 – The Hidden Threat: The Lyme Epidemic – Dr. Jack Weltner is retired from a career that included a private psychiatric practice in Marblehead. He also worked at the Cambridge Guidance Center and Lynn Community Health Center. Through study he has found that Lyme Disease is a much greater threat than most of us realize. Attendees will learn how to protect themselves from this disease.
Wednesday, January 18 – Diana Ross and the Supremes – Bill Sano is a teacher, conductor, pianist, organist and Salem tour guide. His courses at Explorers always draw large numbers of enthusiastic students. Bill will tell the story in words and music of this famous musical group. Come and enjoy Diana Ross and the Supremes.

Monday, January 23 – Abuse in Later Life – Carolyn Lewis is an Abuse in Later Life Advocate at North Shore Elder Services. She works under a grant through the Office of Violence Against Women. She will educate attendees about elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Forewarned is forearmed.
Wednesday, January 25 – Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) – Ms. Michelle Marcella will introduce the MGH Russell Museum. She will discuss the founding of the hospital, the story of the first successful public demonstration of surgical anesthesia (which took place at MGH in 1846), a handful of the hospital’s historic innovations, and MGH’s work today as the largest hospital-based research center in the country. The presentation will include multimedia and a chance to examine artifacts from their collection.
Monday, January 30 – The History and Legends of Marblehead – Pam Peterson is the Director of the Marblehead Museum & Historical Society. Her knowledge of Marblehead history may well be more extensive than that of anyone else today. Her weekly Marblehead Reporter columns share interesting segments of Marblehead history. Ms. Peterson will discuss history and legends covering almost 400 years of life in a very interesting town.
Wednesday, February 1 – Separating Terrorism Facts from Fiction – Randall H. Miller is an adjunct professor and author of Wrong Town: A Mark Landry Novel (A Top 10 Amazon Best- Selling Terrorism Thriller in the U.S., U.K., Canada, & Australia). Government and the media warn us that attacks are being plotted against our mainland from within and outside the United States. Professor Miller will discuss the nature of this threat and steps everyone can take to mitigate risk and save lives.
Monday, February 6 – End of Life Care – Nathaniel R. Lamkin is the Senior Director of Patient &Family Support Services at Care Dimensions (formerly Hospice of the North Shore). He will discuss relevant subjects such as hospice care, palliative care, grief, planning for end-of- life care, planning for advanced care, living with a serious illness, caregiver support, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
Wednesday, February 8 – LBJ the Great Negotiator – Explorer Don Zaik has given a number of historical presentations to Explorers and other organizations. He will tell the story of the man who could negotiate with US senators of different views to get things done. LBJ shepherded the first civil rights and voting rights laws through Congress after the death of President Kennedy.
Monday, February 13 – Beverly and the Navy’s Origin – Beverly Historical Society members Frank Marcos and Fred Hammond will discuss the role Beverly Harbor and surrounding areas played in naval action against the British during the American Revolution. They will compare the claims of Beverly and Marblehead to be the real birthplace of the American Navy.
Wednesday, February 15 – Implications of the Election for Domestic and Foreign Affairs – Marty Schneer is Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center in Marblehead. It seems clear that the November 8 election results portend important political and policy trends. Mr. Schneer will share his analysis of what lies ahead at home and in foreign policy.
Wednesday, February 22 – Mark Twain in Heaven – Peter Van De Bogert and Beth Blanchard are known as the Historytellers of the Northshore. They will perform a two-person dramatization in which they interview Mark Twain in heaven. It is a good bet that Twain has something profound and funny to say about the 2016 election. Questions and discussion will follow the dramatization and a break.
Backup – Current Events – Explorer Frank Hawke will moderate a lively discussion group examining local, national and international issues. Each participant is encouraged to bring articles or subjects of interest for discussion by the group.
