Goldberg Wins Democratic Primary for Treasurer, Finegold Wins Salem

Deborah B. Goldberg, a former Brookline selectwoman, will take on Republican Michael J. Heffernan in November.

Deborah B. Goldberg of Brookline emerged from a field of three Democrats to win the party’s primary election for state treasurer and advance to the November race for the seat being vacated by Treasurer Steve Grossman. Goldberg beat out state Sen. Barry R. Finegold of Andover and state Rep. Thomas P. Conroy of Wayland.

With 84.7 percent of the precincts reporting, Goldberg had 43.3 percent of the vote. Finegold had 30.6 percent and Conroy had 26.2 percent.

In Salem, Goldberg was second to Finegold. Goldberg received 1,528 votes to Finegold’s 1,730 votes and Conroy’s 796 votes.

In the general election to be held Nov. 4, Goldberg will face Republican Michael J. Heffernan and Green-Rainbow candidate Ian Jackson.

Goldberg raised $1,310.000 and $1,360,000, Finegold raised $786,339 and spent $1,120,000, and Conroy raised $302,703 and spent $218,059, according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

Goldberg served as former chairman for the Brookline Board of Selectmen, is president of a non-profit and was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2006.

The treasurer is responsible for maintaining the state funds by investing and maintaining the state budget. The department is divided into seven divisions, abandoned property, board of retirement, the water pollution abatement trust, debt management, deferred compensation, financial education and cash management.
