Man Struck, Killed by Train Causes Commuter Rail Cancellation, Delays

Commuter rail service through Salem on Wednesday night was delayed after a train struck and killed a man on the tracks in Gloucester.

A man was struck and killed by a MBTA commuter rail train on Wednesday night, cancelling train service through Salem for a time and causing delays at the end of the evening commute.

MBTA Transit police said the white male, believed to be in his 40s, that was struck was trespassing on track 2 - the inbound side - by a Rockport line commuter rail train near West Gloucester station at about 6:30 p.m. The man was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries, Transit Police said.

Transit Police officers along with the Gloucester Police and Fire departments responded and the investigation is being handled by Transit Police detectives along with representatives of the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident caused train 131, the 5:30 p.m. outbound train from North Station and train 133, the 6:15 p.m. outbound train from North Station, to be significantly delayed. Passengers ended up making it to Manchester-by-the-Sea Station, where they were bused the rest of the way.

Outbound train 136, which typically leaves at 7:45 p.m. from Rockport, was also delayed and passengers were bused to Manchester-by-the-Sea Station, where the train continued to Boston.

Also, a outbound train 95, which typically leaves Salem at 7:41 p.m., was cancelled because of the incident. Inbound train 94, which typically leaves at 6:55 p.m. from Rockport, was also cancelled.
