North Shore New Year's Events: 2020 Guide

Whether you want to ring in the New Year with a champagne toast at midnight or a New Year's Day hike, we have you covered.

First Night Festivities

Beverly

Beverly’s New Year will take place on Tuesday from 3:30-7:00pm on Cabot Street. Events include Curious Creatures, Discovery Zone, Kids’ Countdown Beach Ball Drop, Balloons, Games & Prizes, Celebrity Authors, Cookie Decorating, Arts & Crafts, Grand Procession Parade and more! Salem

New Years Eve Salem: Launch!! runs from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Old Town Hall at 32 Derby Street. The family-friendly event Hat Making, Photo Booth, Face painting, and Games, as well as an early countdown right before 6 p.m. Suggested donation of $5. Swampscott

First Night Swampscott runs from 2 to 6 p.m. at Swampscott High School on Tuesday. The schedule of events follows:

  • 2:30- 3:15- Chinese Acrobat
  • 3:45-4:30- Comedy and Magic
  • 4:45-5:45- Rainbow Reptile
  • 2:00-5:45- Photo Booth, Face Painting and New Years Eve Crafts in the Cafeteria.
  • 5:45- Countdown and Balloon Drop from second floor

New Year's Day Events

At noon on Wednesday, the First Day Hike begins at the National Park Service Regional Visitor Center at 2 New Liberty Street in Salem. This year’s hike will focus on the importance of the Custom House to Salem’s history. David Moffat from the Salem Historical Society will lead the hike through the downtown district stopping at a few of the locations of past Custom Houses along the way. The hike will finish at the 1819 Custom House at Salem Maritime National Historic Site, followed by an optional walk up and back on Derby Wharf. This event is free and open to all ages. What's Open, Closed on New Year's Day

Many local government offices will close at noon on Tuesday, and all will be closed all day on Wednesday. Trash will be picked up on Monday and Tuesday in most communities. For the remainder of the week, there will be a one-day delay (Wednesday on Thursday, Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday).

Here's a list of what else is opened and closed on the holiday:

  • Libraries: Closed
  • Post Office: Closed
  • Restaurants: Open at owner's discretion
  • Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion
  • Supermarkets: Open at owner's discretion
  • Liquor stores: Open
  • Banks: Closed
  • Gas stations: Open
  • Movie theaters: Open
