SALEM, MA — Salem Police said they recovered a rifle Thursday afternoon when they took a man into custody. Salem State University and Salem police searched the Forest River Conservation area and the nearby MBTA tracks for nearly an hour after receiving reports of a suicidal male, possibly on a motorcycle and carrying a rifle, in the area. The search prompted Salem State to call a shelter-in-place order for its south campus.

The man was taken into custody around 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the shelter-in-place order was lifted at 5:45 p.m. No one was injured in the incident and the man, who police described as cooperative, was taken to Salem Hospital for evaluation.
