Salem Critical Drought Restriction Bans Nonessential Outdoor Water Use

SALEM, MA — Salem residents are restricted from all nonessential outdoor water use — including the watering of lawns and gardens via sprinkler or irrigation system, car washing and filling of swimming pools — after the city declared a Level 3 "Critical" Drought on Friday.

The city of Salem's water supply is provided by the Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board. SBWSB is required by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection through the Water Management Act to "implement nonessential outdoor water use restrictions during times of drought."

While the SBWSB is currently at full supply, officials said the city is required to implement the water use restrictions per MassDEP's WMA, and therefore asks residents to refrain from watering outdoors and to conserve water.
